54 Steamer Mattie White River Arkansas Sept 4th. 1864 Sunday our fleet entered the White River early this morning, got along very slow as the River is very Crooked & there are shallows. about noon we Came to a sand bar which one of the Boats John [Nair?] Could not Cross so it un-loaded, & tried to cross But failed to do so the Troops were put on the other, & we proceded But were delayed untill sunset. the Bar is 40 miles from the mouth. A man was in swiming and got drowned near the Gun Boat 38 & no assistance Rendered Him or any search made for His body.
