59 Duvals Bluff Arkansas Sept 9th. 1864 Friday We Disembarked at this place to day, and marched out 1 1/2 miles & Byuovacked in the woods. This is a very hard destitute & God forsaken Country, there is no water But the Hot water of the River whos Receeding waters have left the marshy Country along its Banks to Rot & Stink in the Summers Sun. Sent a letter to Mrs C.J. Henderson Containing the Photograph of J.F. Zediken O. sergt Co. "G" 12th Iowa, He requesting an exchange with me. We are near a large Prairie which I see a glimse of through the Trees, the first I have seen so far south.
