64 Camp 12th. Iowa Near Brownsville Ark Sept. 14th. 1864 Wensday This forenoon I Read a Story by Robinson, "the Spy" a Story of the Revolution. Some good passages in it. I had my Shirt, drawers & Body washed, and this afternoon I mended my Trousers which had some very bad Holes in them, if not very neatly done it was very satisfactory to myself. for Holes in the seat of ones Trousers is very unpleasant, even in Arkansas. It Came my turn to get dinner to day . our mess of 4 take it meal about, our Breakfast Consists of hard Tack, Coffee & Sow Belly. Dinner, softened hard Tack, Sow Belly & Coffee Supper, Sow Belly, softened Hard Tack Tea & fresh Beef.
