73 On the March in Arkansas Sept 23 -1864 Friday It is Three years yesterday since I enlisted & still the war goes on. We are and have been on 2/3 Rations for some time, and the Crackers full of Bugs and worms. for some Cause to us unknown we have been greatly wronged with regard to Rations They are very short in quantity & most abomibly Poor in quality. A Bridge we built a cross Black River at Elgin and we crossed at 4 p.m. & marched very Rappidly for 9 1/2 miles up the East Bank of the River, the River at the crossing was some 13' rods wide & 5 & 6 feet deep
