92 Steamer Empire City Missouri River October 11th. 1864 Tuesday The fleet made very slow progress last night as we ran on Sand bars nearly half the time. Reached St. Charles to day at 9 oclock A.M, it is a very flourishing place on the North side of the River. the North Missouri Rail Road Crosses the River at this point by means of a ferry Boat built expressly for that purpose, St Charles is 50 miles from St Louis by River and 40 by Rail Road. There is some fine farms on the Banks of the River. We made very slow progress to day on accout of Bars. the River is all ways Changing the Channel.
