93 Steamer Empire City Mo River October 12th. 1864 Wensday Our Pilot labored from 5 oclock untill 9 A.M. in vain efforts to Cross a sand Bar we struck last night, so we landed, & all the Infantry and Horses march across the Bend 3 miles to a point above the Bar in hopes that our Boat thus lightened would soon Come up, But in this we were miserably deceived for the old scow swung on snags & Bars for 24 hours and as we took no Rations or Blankets with us we were 24 hours wit out food onely such as apples &c we gathered in the orchards along the shore, and as there was a very hard frost we suffered fro Cold very much. our Company was on Picket while on shore
