97 On a Sand Bar near Herman Mo River October 16th. 1864 Sunday. We got fast on a Bar of sand near the mouth of the Gasconade River, Disembarked early this morning & marched about 6 miles, and we took our Haversacks & Blankets with us, for fear we have to sleep on shore, for there is no dependence to be put in Steam Boats, on the Missouri River, and our Boat the Empire City, under the Guidance of its present Pilot has a powerfull atraction for Snags & Sand Bars. We were picked up however near sun set and many of the Dutch Farmers with thier buxom wives & Daughters came and saw us embark, and waved us adieu, on our mission of driving the Invader from the state,
