98 On Missouri River October 17. 1864 Monday We had to disembark twice today, and march over the sand Bar to enable our Boat to pass over. We left St Louis the first of the fleet, and now we are the last, as our boat is the largest Steam wheeler of the fleet and Consequently the hardest to manage on the shallows. if it were not for the name of River Transportation, we might have gone on foot. for we march half the time any way, and have to wait for the Boat at that. I got 5 letters from Jane at Jefferson City, one from G G. Henderson, one from Father & Mother
