John L. Coffin Land, Tax-Paying & Commission Agency Davenport, Iowa Jany 14 18670 Thos C. Durant, Esq. Dear Sir, Herein I enclose a/c current and draft on Gilman, Son & Co, for $161 74/100 in settlement -- Also, enclose a statement of lands &c remaining unsold and notes on hand for collection the value of which is estimated at $38.413 43/100 -- Several notes are past due and the delinquents have asked extensions, and as the security is good I think it better to extend than to foreclose the mortgages -- The year just closed has been one of the poorest for business we have had since '59, but I think we shall recuperate when the [one?] in Europe closes -- Yours truly Jno L. Coffin
