Pekin, Ill., Nov. 8 1866. Thomas C Durant, Esq. Sir: I have just perused with pleasure the account (as published in the Chicago Tribune) of the "Great Pacific RR Excursion", lately made under your direction as Vice-President and general manager of said railroad. And being favorably impressed with the ability and efficiency which you have displayed in the construction of Railroads, &c. as I happen to be your namesake I have thought it possible that we were blood-relatives, and that I would direct you a communication, to endeavor to ascertain whether or not such were the case. To this end, I will give you all I know of my genealogy. My father's name was David Durant jun. and he was born at Amherst, Mass. about the year 1790, married Nancy Ferson, Of Francestown NH. & settled in Walden, Caledonia County Vt. where he died about 10 years ago. His father's name was David Durant, whose other son was Benjamin Durant, now living in Calais Vt. I have only one brother, who is a practising physician at Danville Vt. His name is James Starrett Durant. He, as well as myself, is a graduate of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. I graduated in 1845 - am now an A.M. - have been engaged most of the time since 1845 in teaching in Minerva College, at Minerva, Mason Co. Ky. I am now located on my farm in Tasewell Co. Ill. 12 miles
