Henry W. Johnson Law offices of H.W Johnson Knickerbocker Life Insurance Building 239 Broadway (Elevator No. 1 Park Pl.) P.O Box: 2939 New York, February 20th --- 1886 Mr. W.W. Durant Dear Sir. In answer to the inquiries made of me by Mr. J.S. Baker in your behalf, I have to say that the only thing I find on my books or among my papers which appears to throw any light on the matter is certain entries in my ledger. I find that under date of Oct. 8th 1866 Mr. C.W. Durant was charged for drawing an assignment to him of a home & mortgage executed by Robert Taylor & wife to Thos. W. Durant & on the 25th of that month, is an entry showing that I forwarded to the Register of Union Co. North Carolina an assignment of a mortgage for record which I presume was the same one although the entry does not so state. I also find the following charge under date of June 22 1867. " To consultn. & advice at your office as to agreement between you & Hugh Downing in reference to Mtge held by you on own property in Union Co. N.C. & drawing agree't & sending Do. to him by mail" These entries would seem to indicate that Mr Durant held the mortgage at the latter date Yours Resply Henry W. Johnson
