Charlotte Jany 27th 1856 J C [Durant?] [Esq?] No 3 South St NY Dear Sir, I visited the [Masion] on Friday and found there as I expected (all up in a heap) waiting for Beeting & Lead pipe. They say if they had them they could start the mill in two or three days , but I can see more than a weeks work to do. The stone for the [Aras?] mill is not hear yet and God only knows when it will [bee?] on the ground. Everybody and everything is frozen up, and no one will venture out on the road. I did not have time to go under ground for I found that I was obliged to return to Charlotte in the morning. I just had time to look over the pay roles for Dec and found it called for six hundred dollars ($600) besides some out
