Charlotte, N.C., May 16th 1885 Thomas C. Durant Esq New York. Dear Sir: After an examination of the records of (illegible) County as suggested in one recent interview I am able to inclose the following rough abstracts and make the following (illegible) (illegible): On the Lemonds Mine, as you will see from the abstract, the little vests in Della A Crowell, subject a mortgage from Robert Taylor to yourself and by yourself transferred to Charles W. Durant. If this mortgage remains unpaid and you can substantiate the fact in court, we may be able to recover the land: From your conversation I inferred that Charles W. Durant was dead. In this (illegible) allow me to ask the following questions. When did Charles M. Durant die? and where? Did he leave a will? If so who is his Executor? and to throw further light on the subject I would inquire if, in your knowledge, is Robert Taylor still living and if so where? and also is Charles Judson living? if so where, and did he execute the deed to wager April 14, 1881? It may be necessary to find these parties and obtain their answers to these questions in order to substantiate your claims, as you will have to from the validity of your mortgage on the property by other witnesses (illegible) (illegible) and the whole question may turn when the testimony of these two parties. If Charles W. Durant is dead please inform me
