8 [left margin] 93 To cure a Cough Take a Wine Glassful of spring Water & put into it a spoonful of the Syrup of Horehound & mix with it nine or ten drops of the Spirit of Sulphur - [left margin] 92 Excellent Bitter for the Stomach One ounce of Gentian root sliced, one ounce of fresh rind of Lemon two drachm's of Cardamon Seeds bruised, three drachms of Seville Orange peel, pour a pint and a half of boiling Water over these Ingredients, let it stand an hour, then decant the clear liquor, and take a Wine Glassful two or three times a Day N.B. It should be kept closely covered after the Water is put to the ingredients - [left margin] 89 To make good liquid Blacking for Shoes & Boots A quarter of a pound of ivory black, a quarter of a pound of moist Sugar, a table spoonful of flour, a piece of Tallow about the size of a Walnut and a small piece of Gum Arabic - make a paste of the flour, and whilst hot put in the Tallow, then the Sugar, and afterwards mix the whole together in a quart of Water, and you will have a beautiful shining blacking [left margin] 90 To make Ginger Cakes for the pain in the Stomach To two pounds of the brownest Sugar add one pint of Water, then let this simmer over the fire, scumming it well till all is taken off; let it boil till it is as thick as Cream then add one Spoonful of Ginger and one Spoonful of Cinnamon both finely powdered NB It is boiled enough when it will stand dropped on a Cloth.
