[Left margin] 9 [Left margin] 83 To make One gallon of black writing Ink Into a glazed stone Jar or Pitcher put one pound of aleppo galls slightly bruised; then add one Gallon of [Tairdnhr?] nearly of a boiling heat; let these stand together for fourteen Days upon the Kitchen Hearth, or moderately warm, after that time add four ounce of green Copperas or sulfate of Iron four ounces of logwood Chips or shaving one ounce of Alum one ounce of sugar Candy and four ounces of gum arabic or Senegal. Let the whole remain ten or twelve days longer in a moderate heat the mouth of the Vessel slightly covered with paper. Stir the Ingredients well with a stick twice a Day during the whole time; then strain off the Ink through linen, or flannel, bottle it, pour a little Brandy on the top of the Ink in each Bottle, then cork them well, and keep them for use in a place of temperate heat - [Left margin] 93 (To cure a Cough (Duplicate see 1:8) Take a Wine Glassful of spring Water & put into it a spoonful of the syrop of Horehound mixing with the above, nine or ten drops of the spirit of Sulphur - [left margin] 92 To make Lavender Water Take a pint of the best rectified Spirits of Wine a shillings worth of oil of Lavender, six penny worth of Essence of [crossed out: Bergamot] ambergris; mix these together and keep it close from the Air; let it stand till it is fine, before you draw it off. NB. always keep it close stopped, lest it should evaporate.
