12 [left margin] 13 To clean Mahogany Tables &c Dissolve two ounces of Gum-mastick & eight ounces of gum-Sandrach in a quart of Alkohol to which add four ounces of Venici Turpentine and to this let three ounces of common Wax be added which will form an excellent Composition for Furniture - To use this - Clean the Table well, dip a piece of Flannel in the Varnish whilst warm, & rub it on the Table, suffering it to remain on for a quarter of an hour, then apply a hard Brush to the Table, rubbing it over in all directions and finish it with a piece of clean dry flannel - This will produce a gloss like a Mirror [left margin] 23 To clean Boots and Shoes - If to the above Composition there be added two ounces of lump Sugar, and the same quantity of Ivory Black, an excellent compound will be had, equally good for giving a polish to Boots & Shoes, and preserving the leather from cracking - [left margin] 34 To brown Gun Barrels After the Barrel is finished, to give it a brown colour, it is to be rubbed over with aqua fortis or Spirit of Salt diluted with Water, and then to be laid by for a Week or more, till a complete Coat of rust is formed. A little oil is then to be applied, and the surface being rubbed dry, it is to be polished by means of a hard brush with the addition of a little Bees-wax - [left margin] 36 The Seed of Turkey Rhubarb should be sown the beginning of February, or a bed of good soil if rather sandy the better [left margin] after E.W.
