16 An American Prescription for the Cure of the Rheumatism Dissolve in a Pint of good Rum two ounces of Gum Guaiacum finely pulverised and two ounces of Nitre likewise in fine powder (otherwise it will not dissolve - let this stand in a Bottle not corked close in the Chimney Corner, or in any other warm place for ten Days or a fortnight, shaking the Bottle several times a Day; it will be in [illegible] fit for use at that period, but the longer it is kept, the better it is, at the end of a Year it is infinitely more effectual - Dose Take two teaspoonsful at Bedtime in a Cup ful of Water Gruel or in a Wine glass with white Wine and swallow it as fast as possible, otherwise it will adhere to the Cup or Wine Glass; repeat this Dose for ten Nights or, if the Fit is obstinate, till it is entirely conquered it is an alterative and acts slowly, but in Rheumatism never fails if persisted in - it requires no Confinement unless it should bring on possible perspiration, but which is rarely the Case says that a skein of strong Silk if tied round the body of a [illegible] will prevent Rheumatism The usefulness of two common Plants (the Poppy & Blue Bottle) Every plant in the Corn Field posses virtues particularly adapted to the maladies incident to the condition of the labouring man - The Poppy cures the pleurisy, procures sleep, stops haemorrhages and [illegible] of blood - Poppy seeds form an emulsion similar to that from almonds in every respect when prepared in the same manner They also yield by expression, fine Salad oil,like that from Florence The blue bottle is diuretic, vulnerary, cordial, and cooling an antidote to the stings of venomous insects, and a remedy for inflamation of the Eyes
