For Storing Apples in Winter The season for storing apples having arrived, the fruit should be gathered carefully in a dry, sunny or airy day & removed to the Fruit room - Of all the methods of protecting Apples & Pears none is so desirable perhaps so effectual as that practiced in America it consists of completely covering the fruit above & below with a linen Sheet - any other substance as the thickest blankets or rugs will it is reported fail when a single linen sheet will effectually secure the fruit from the decomposing influence of frost In France we are told the fruit is placed on Shelves singly so as not to touch each other a board is fastened in front of each shelf, to secure its contents & a sheet is let down in front so as to enclose the shelves - A good spacious room with divisions for the several varieties wherein contact may be avoided affords the only certain means to prevent the decay caused by the Chemical attraction which takes place when the fruit touch each other and a linen screen or covering is the next requisite it should be so arranged as to fold over & cover the fruit as clothes are covered in a wardrobe --
