Directions for Knitting a Mitten six pins required for knitting this mitten Put on 72 stitches knit a plain row and join them, then 9 rows ribbed (2 stitches each way) then a plain row, next row 3 plain stitches 4th turned then a plain row, the next row be careful to make the turned stitch in the centre of the 3 plain ones of if the row before last (this forms a seed pattern) continue in this way for 14 or 15 rows being sure to end with a plain row - commence the thumb by turning the first stitch, increase a stitch by knitting the pearl stitch below the next stitch on the pin & afterwards knitting that very stitch which makes three stitches where there were but 2, increase another stitch in same manner and turn the last stitch - leave these 5 stitches on a pin by themselves to form the thumb - be very careful to keep the seed pattern perfect - the next is a plain row extending over the thumb stitches, the next is a turned row and mind to turn the centre of the 5 thumb stitches (sometimes to keep the pattern perfect it is necessary at the join of the Thumb to have two turned stitches together) the next is a plain row - and then and every 4th row until 25 stitches are on the Thumb pin (always begin this 4th row of the Thumb by turning the first stitch) increase a stitch as above directed, but turn or not as the pattern requires, increase another stitch at the end of the row, and turn the last stitch like the first - then a plain round a turned round, a plain round, and then a turned row only on the thumb pin - put the hand stitches on two pins as four pins will be required to finish the thumb on the Thumb pin add five stitches by looping them on (not knitting) - Knit a plain row round them, and then a turned round & plain alternately for 13 rounds, ending with a plain - 7 rows ribbed - a plain row and then knit off the stitches & the Thumb is complete turn over
