To knit a German Pattern in 2 colours Cast on an equal number of stitches in the dark wool - Put on light wool and knit the next row entirely with it & so as to have both wools at the same end - 1st row Knit 1st stitch with both colours Bring the dark wool under the right hand pin, and place it between the Thumb & left hand pin - Then bring light wool forward over the pin - Slip the 2nd stitch (taking it off by knitting the needle behind the stitch - Knit the 3rd stitch & with it take in the dark wool which is on the outside remembering to bring it back to its place or it will cross over the right hand pin which must not be - Bring the LW over the pin slip next S, knit next taking in the wool as before - continue this slipping & knitting till before the last S - when bring both Ws forward under the pin & slip the last S. This row being only a preparation for the pattern is not repeated 2nd row and right side of pattern Knit 1st S in both colours & the entire row with dark W holding the light in left hand a little distance from the pin. The 2nd S will be a light one, knit it, securing the light wool at the back by crossing the D.W. over it before knitting the S - The 3rd S is a dark one knit it securing the L.W. as before - Slip the long light S - knit the two following as directed above - Slip the long one & so on - Bring both colours forward under the pin & take off the last stitch - 3rd row wrong side of pattern To be knit entirely with L.W. Knit the 1st S with both colours - Bring the D.W. before the left hand pin If a double stitch follows (which will be formed of 2 colours) Knit it with the wool enclosed as directed in the 1st row but if a single stitch bring the wool forward over the pin and slip it & then knit the double one - throw over the wool, slip again and knit the double one always securing the loose W. proceed thus recollecting always to bring the 2 colours forward under the pin & to slip the last S. 4th row like the second - Encrease the number of stitches by knitting the last S on wrong side & adding a loop at the commencement of every row on the right side of pattern -
