May, Monday, 12, 1862. It looks rather gloomy this morning and I think we will get some rain to day whitch is very mutch needed at this time to make vegitation grow. The news arrived just now of the surrender of Norfolk and that the Rebel Gun Boat Merimac had been blown up. So mutch for secession. The mail brought no news for me. Dan came home Last night - he was well pleased with the trip and likes the country very well. We are selling some goods but not as many as Iff we would sell on time.
