On Friday morning we got the news that they ware Surrounding Kimble and had a large force in reserve ready to attact us at the same time but we thought we ware ready for them let them come when they choose. About noon we heard a volley of Musketry about 1 mile up the Elk Fork and soon after Some of our Scouts come in bearing the body of John A. Washington whom they had shot. He was the last near relative of the father of Our beloved Country Geo. Washington and the man who Sold Mt. Vernon to the Ladies of America. When Our boys brought him in they threw him on the ground and let him lay and I went to him and examined him and Saw where he was shot and then closed his eyes and straitened him out in good order So that he could be burried decent. That night as usual we lay on our arms and was aroused by false alarms. Saturday early in the forenoon the enemy sent in a flag of truce to get the body of Washington and appeared much affected when they heard he was dead he held the rank of Colonel and was one of their leading spirits. On Friday part of the 13th Ind. Reg. had a pretty hard fight with a detachment of the enemy in the mountains near Kimbles and succeeded in whipping them badly and caused them to retreat leaveing 30 of their dead and 14 prisoners It is said that there was 57 of our boys and Over 500 of the enemy engaged. and that our boys ware falling back before such numbers and one of their Lieutenants was badly wounded and cryed for quarter and instead of granting it they Bayoneted him which incensed the Patriots so they swore they would have revenge then and
