them to the fire and I beleive if we had remained on the top of the mountain that several of us would have frozen to death. There was Seven horses perished that night from exposier. I wrote to you that we ware then on our way to make an attact on the enemy at Green Brier but owing to the Storm we did not go until yesterday moring Oct 3rd. we Started at 2 Oclock in the morning and marched 12 miles to their camp. The forces that marched with us consisted of the 7th 9th 13th 14th 15th & 17th. Ind Regiments and the 25th & 32nd Ohio Regiments making in all about 6,000 men and in addition we had Col Loomis with his battery of 6 rifled cannon Capt Howe with 4 six pound cannon and 2 12 pound Howitzers and 2 6 pound cannon in command of some Germans making in all 14 pieces. At 9 Oclock A.M. we arrived in front of their camp and the 14th Ind. commenced fireing on their out posts and soon drove them in and then our Cannon advanced and opened fire. The 15th Ind and 25th Ohio ware kept back as a reserve and the others commenced trying to gain a position to attact; meanwhile our cannon ware at work constantly throwing Shells in to their Camp, which was well fortified and defended by Several Cannon and as we under Stand by 10,000 men. and if ever anything sounded terriffic it was the roar of the battle. At 10 Oclock the 13th & 15th Ind & 25th Ohio ware ordered forward and when we had got within 1/2 miles of their breastworks we ware ordered to prepare to Storm their works at the point of the bayonet.
