and a great many arms such as Muskets, and Squrrel rifles and double barrell shot guns, the latter have all been of the best quality as the barrels show them to have been the genuine twisted barrels. The Rebels had nearly all left when Capt Loomis appeared on the hill on the opposite side of the river and commenced throwing some of his [unering?] shells into them when they set fire to the buildings above mentioned and then send in double quick time. They had a train loaded with plunder which they ware just starting with when he got his batterry planted and although over one mile and a half off he threw a shell with such accuracy as to strike the Locomotive and disabled it consequently that much of their property fell into our mens hands On a beutiful eminance about 1/2 mile from the town the foundation and most of the first Story of a college was built which according to what we can see of it would have been as fine a building of the kind when finished as there is to be found in the west. It would have been built entirely of Stone of which the country abounds in the greatest of plenty and of the verry best quality, but, I fear it will never be finished as one of the main fortifications are built in over and around it. For the present I must drop this subject, for this time. As I said before we are to march in the morning for Nashville which is 61 miles from here, and then I will write again. You wanted to know if I wanted the lot fenced in this Spring I did intend to have it done but I do not know how I am to pay for it as it seems the pay master is never comeing, and in consequence thereof money has become a verry scarce article in this Regt. Sure as none of the officers and but verry few of the men have a [red?] I have been entirely without for some time until today I prevailed on one of the boys of the company to let me have $5.00 which I must make do me until payday let it be long or short. I am officer of the guard today again consequently I get no sleep tonight, and it is now midnight and I must go to the guardhouse. I received a letter from [Ferman?] today. Wm Appleton is not able to march consequently we leave him here tomorrow Jo Macy come up with us last night about well again. Direct to Bowling Green until further orders. Write immediately as I want to know about that box. No more for want of room your affectionate husband, A.F. Davis It takes my last Stamp to send this letter and none can be got here.
