In Camp near Corinth Miss, May 21st 1862. Mrs. Sarah Davis Dear Wife Yours of the 9th & 10th Inst. come to hand this morning and you may be sure the news it contained was most welcome to me as it had been some time since I had heard from you. You cannot immagine the joy it gave me to hear of your improved health as that is the best news to me of any I have heard for many a day. I am also glad to hear that the children ware also in good health and I am able to send equally as good news in regard to my own health which is most excellent You no doubt are all anctiously looking for news from this division of the Army and well you may for matters of great importance are about to take place within 3 or 4 miles from where I now set. By all appearances the Same Strategy is being practiced here that was. undertaken by McClelland at York Town but I am in hopes we will be more successful in our undertaking than he was. as I hope we will either capture the enemy or give him a good thrashing. Our forces are now within 3 miles of Corinth and our lines are in the form of a Crescent or half moon and we are now fortifying as we go. Within the last 4 days we have built no less than 12 miles of breastwork and are now ready to move forward again and will then halt and build again and so on until we have entirely closed in on them. The Rebels are disputing evry inch of the ground as we advance and there is not ten minutes in the day but what we heare the fireing of the pick-
