ets in advance of our lines and sometimes the heavy booming of the cannon puts in to break the monotony of the scene. Gen. Shermans Brigade which is immediately on our right had some hard fighting today when he made his advance in front of his lines. The booming of the cannon and the rattle of the musketry was terrific for about an hour which resulted in Sherman gaining the position he wanted. He lost one man killed and 21 wounded but what the result was with the enemy I have not heard Evry day there is some of our men wounded in the picket fighting but as a general thing the wounds are slight owing to the great distance at which the fireing is done Our boys claim to haveing sent several of the Butternuts (as they call the Secesh) off limping evry day but as a general thing there is not much damage done on either side. Within a day or two no doubt our Division will advance and take up another position and in doing so we may have to fight our way but that is something that we are prepared for all the time as we are called up at 3 1/2 Oclock evry morning and form line of battle in front of Our camp and remain so until after daylight. then we break ranks long enoughf to eat breakfast and then again form and take our position near our breastwork and remain there all day which is becomeing very much of a bore as the boys are all anctious for more active work. We have to keep three days rations in our haversacks all the time so that we are ready for any emergency at a minutes warning and the boys are ordered to sleep with their clothes on and with their guns and ammunition at their sides. We take some prisoners evry day some of whom come voluntaryly and give themselves up who claim to have been pressed into the service against their will and avail themselves of the first oportunity to escape,
