and the yellow flags float from the roofs of both Hotels which shows that they ware both used for Hospitals by the Secesh. Gen J. C. Breckenridge organized his Brigade at this place. Our Brigade is encamped about 1 1/2 miles from the village and are Scattering around in different parts of the country. It is reported that the 15th has the job of garisoning this place and East Port on the Tennessee River. 6 miles from here but how true it is I cannot tell. but it looks like it may prove true as we have one Company at each place. I would be well satisfied to remain here during the Summer month as it is said to a very healthy part of the country and we have as good water as I ever saw and plenty of it. The Soil is verry poor and sandy. The timber is almost entirely Oak and Pine. There is but few farms cleared and they are poorly improved and poorer cultivated. There is some little corn planted which is almost knee high but looks sickly The main crop heretofore planted appears to have been Cotton but so far I have not saw a single Stalk growing this seazon, Evry little clearing has a lot of Peach trees growing on it which all look thrifty and healthy and grow as large and the same shape as do the Apple trees in our County. and evry tree is loaded with fruit. Apple trees do not amount to much here, The weather is clear and warm nearly all the time but the nights are cool so much so that 2 blankets are necessary to sleep with cumfort in our tents. The health of the Regiment is improveing very fast and we have but very few sick at present. The Regiment was called into line a few minutes since to hear the news read that Fort Pillow and Memphis and all the Rebel Gun Boats except one had been taken by our men, I also saw a Cin Commercial of the 4th inst which gave the details of some heavy fighting by McClelland before Richmond and if he proves successful there which no doubt he will I cannot see where the Rebels expect to make another Stand and I see nothing to delay a Speedy termination of the war unless they brake into Guerrilla band and scat
