Tullahoma Tenn. Aug 5th 1862 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear wife Yours of the 25th ult. come to hand last friday evening and on Saturday afternoon I commenced answering it and only got a few lines written when we received orders to get ready for marching immediately so I had to defer it until the present time; We Started on the march at 4 Oclock P.M. and went 6 miles and encamped and on sunday morning come on to this place and remained 3 hours when we took the cars and went to Manchester 12 miles east from here which is situated on a branch R.R. going from here to McMinnville 35 miles from here at which place the Rebs ware in considerable force but when we arrived at Manchester we got the news that Gen Nelson had attacted and routed them on the night before (Saturday night) therefore it was not worth our while to go further, so we remained there over night and then Started back to this place on foot as the cars ware too busy to haul us We got back here at 3 Oclock P.M. and are now awaiting further orders which are expected at any moment. It is supposed that we will move on towards Stephenson on the way to Chatanooga. But we dont know where we are going until we get there and then sometimes dont hardly know where we are. We have not put up our tents here consequently I cannot get at my trunk which is packed in the wagon, therefore I have to use a pencil to write this The country is very poor in this region and is nearly all Schrub oak barrens and very poor sandy soil consequently there is but little improvement.
