3 Immediately around our camp the country is quite poor but 3 or 4 miles from here and near the base of the mountains there is many very fine and productive farms. We hear that Gen Banks has had a fight with Stonewall Jackson and that Jackson was too much for him. The papers try to smooth the matter over by saying that Banks had to fall back but we Old Soldiers have leared enough to know that when the papers say our forces have fallen back that it means they ware nicely whipped but too proud to own it. I guess they will have to send old G. H. (as the boys familiarly call him) over into Virginia with his 21st Brigade and I think the falling back would be on the other side at least we have generally had it that way and would be willing to resk it if they will send us over there. But the old adg is that Brgg is a good dog &c. I am pleased to hear that little Union had patriotism enough left to furnish her quota of troops for the new call, and as regards the officers that they elected to command them Some of them will do. and if they all do not prove right the boys will have no one to blame but themselves for they
