been unable to write to you as we have been on the march evry day since, although we are now only 6 miles from where we were at that time. On Friday morning last our Regt was ordered to march at daylight. We went 6 miles through the Valley and then up the mountain to the Summit, and proceeded on to the Village of Altomount 16 miles from our Camp at Vervilla which place we reached at one Oclock P.M. hoping to find some Rebs there but ware disappointed as we only found 15 or 20 men who claimed to be citizens all collected in a whiskey Shop; those we took prisoners and after remaining in town 2 hours and collecting all the information we could in regard to the movements of the enemy we started back bringing the prisoners with us. We come back, 8 miles and encamped for the night and Saturday at 12 Oclock we got back to our camp. Saturday night at 12 Oclock M. we ware awakened out of a good
