I have just this minute received a letter from Ferman dated Nov 17th being only 5 days old. He had just returned from a visit to Runions Haimlicks and Vans, and reports all well. Mother was at Vans and he Saw Helen also at Himlicks. He writes no other news. I think we will remain here for Several days by all appearances The Rebs are said to still hold Murfreesborough with a Small force but that their main body is falling back on Chatanooga. Their Cavalry Still harrass our out post more or less evry day. After we had left our Camp at Silver Springs on the morning of the 18th and had been gone a few hours 3 Company of the 2nd Ind. Cav. ware sent back in that direction and when they come to the Camp they found quite a large body of the Rebs Cavalry there who had dismounted and ware hunting up the old Shoes and boots &c which our boys had thrown away. The Ind. boys made a dash on them and Killed 9 wounding 15 or 20, and captureing 17 prisoners, Scattering the remainder in evry direction. Yesterday our Cavalry and their had a Skirmish about 10 miles out yesterday in which ours had to get back on double quick. There was considerable of Cannonadeing this morning Some distance to the East of here but we do not know where it was nor what was the result. There was a large train Started back to Mitchellsville a few days Since for clothing for the men which will be up this morning or tomorrow. Our boys are not Suffering for anything but Socks. The goverment Socks are a very poor article and where there is so much marching to do as we have done lately they soon wear out, consequently many are entirely without. And it appears to be a harder job to get plenty of socks than any other article of Clothing which is furnished by the goverment. Our Regt. has now 543 men present and out of that number there is not one in the hospital and only (11) eleven on the sick list this morning. Dr. Youart of LaFayette our Surgeon is perfectly dispised by almost evry private in the Regt but nevertheless he manages to keep their health in good condition
