Camp Near Nashville Tenn Dec. 21st 1862 Mrs. Sarah Davis Dear Wife Yours of the 14th inst come to hand this morning and I now hasten to answer it. I was glad to hear of your improved health and also that the children are well, but Sorry to hear of the afflictions of your Fathers family. My own health is excellent. I was very much Surprised to hear that the Expressage on the apples was so much and only wish you had not Sent them for it is more than I ought to pay for such things at this time. By the way they have not arrived yet and I do not Know how soon they will for the Express is very much cowded all the time between here and Louisville, but I hope they will be here in time for a Christmas feast, and a welcome feast it will be for us when it does come. Day before yesterday I was at the express office and got the Notes and Mortgage for our house trade
