(Added note at head of page:-) I never saw the little children that ware going to mill since I could not them through the pickets at Stones River (or Murfreesboro) on the 31st of Dec. he jumped up on the fence and waved his hat and hurrahed for the Union and said come over here you Butternut Scallawags and we'l give you thunder. The boys ware afraid that he would get shot and pulled him down off of the fence. Him and Jo. I believe are all the ones in the Company that you know. Tell your GrandPa. that I think 20 is a pretty large family and is more than we ever have in one Mess here. I suppose that your Mother will be for going back to Liberty soon as she wants to get in her own house but I hope she wont go until the weather begins to get warmer. for she will go home and go to work to fixing up and will overwork herself and take cold and get sick again and now she is getting better I want her to be careful and not get a backset. The weather is so warm today that a man can go without his coat and not get cold but 3 or 4 days since it was quite cold for this part of the country. There is a great many Soldiers here now and lots more comeing evry day from Nashville. Gen. Jeff C. Davis captured four Regiments of the Rebels 3 or 4 days since somewhere between here and Shelbyville. Gen. Rosecrans is giveing them thunder on all sides (or rather the men under his command are) and if all the othe Generals would do as well the Rebels would be whipped into a peace before three months. About ten thousand men are at work here.
