through it and the logs around it are so big that none but a very large cannon can shoot through it. So you see if the Rebels should drive us away from the dirt walls by throwing bomb shells over the walls then we would go into the Stockade and then they would find it hard to get at us. At different places around the walls there is places fixed for cannons and in some places there is big cellars made which is covered over very deep, only a small door to get in at and in these cellars the powder and cannon balls are kept, so that the Rebels cannot set the powder on fire with their bomb shells. So I think if Mr Bragg will pay us a viset we will send him away with a fea in his ear I see Eli Osborn evry few days. he is well and appears to enjoy Soldiering as well as any one. Ask your uncle Thom. if he cant write me a letter and tell me what he thinks of the war and Politicks, etc. Tell him I Say for him to Stick to Old Abe and give the Secesh in Indiana thunder and all will come out right for we are bound to whip them down here and if the people at home will keep them down there the soldiers will settle them down here. Tell him that Gen Rosecrans is making the Niggers do nearly all the teaming and a great deal of the dirty hard work so that he has more soldiers to do the fighting. Your Mother said She was going to write me a letter on sunday; tell her that while she was writing that I was working on the fortifications with my company. Sunday is like all other days to a Soldier. Have not you went to school most long enough to be able to write me a letter Give my repects to all the friends and my love to your Ma. and Sisters and some of you write to me often is the wish of your affectionate Father A.F.Davis
