(Added comment at head of this & the following page:-) myself and all the Liberty boys are well. John [Mac?] has some thing the matter with him so that he cannot talk louder than a whisper and I told him should get a discharge but he says he dont want out. He is well and does duty all the time only he is not put on Picket for he could not have any one who should come near him and as much less as such a one can be got for Attend to it as soon as you possibly can and Send it by Express to me at this place It might be that we will move from here before a great while therefore it is necessary that no time be lost in attending to it. I can get one here but they cost at least double what they do there so it stands me in hand to get it there. You wanted to know if I was yet a Lieut and if I get any more pay and what a Scouts duty is in battle. Well in answer I am yet a Lieut. I get no more pay and our position in battle will be wherever we are supposed to be needed worst. We will not be what is properly called Scouts. We as I before wrote to you are selected for our former bravery in battle and good soldierly conduct generally, and it is considered as a mark of honor to be attached to it. We have not got horses yet owing to the heavy draft made to supply the Cavalry and Artillery but the requisition has been made for them for some time and they may be here in a day or two and maybe not for some time yet. We all remain with our companies until the horses are got ready and attend to our duty as we always have, but as soon as they are procured then we we are to be Stationed always near Brigade Head Quarters and always be ready for any enterprise for which we are needed, and will be exempt from all guard and Picket duty.
