Murfreesboro Tenn May 13 1863 Mrs Sarah Davis Dear wife Yours of the 5" inst come to hand some 5 days since but for two reasons I have been delaying an answer. One is I was in hopes of receiving the letter which you say you wrote me in regard to expressing my Sword. And the other reason is that I have been looking and awaiting for the sword itself but I am sorry to say that neither of them has yet arrived. I go or send to the office evry day but have not yet sent today but will before mailing this. And hope to get it. Things are very quiet here now and no prospect of a movement soon. On Saturday Sunday and Monday there was great joy maifested here in regard to the news from Hookers Army as all kinds of rumors ware afloat in regard to his success there and even went so far as to say that the Stars and Stripes was floating over Richmond. But yesterday the news was not so good and today we have to come to the humileating acknowledgment that Hooker has not whipped Lee and our Flag has not yet been planted in Richmond. But still there is some joy in knowing that Stoneman did a good thing with his Cavalry and Banks has been doing a good work in Louisana. Hooker may have done a good work and done the enemy more harm than what he received. But it has always been the way when that Army has fought a battle that at first the news was favorable to us but soon the news began to get less and less favorable and finally wound up by giveing
