of death for Desertion in this Army and several have already received the deserters doom. The Army would have been many thousands stronger today had that policy been inaugerated one year since. We received a letter from Cap McKinney this week he is Still bad and I think by the way he writes that he is getting worse but he tries to be cheerful in his letters but I think it is general forced. I will stop until moring. Sunday Moring June 7. The weather has been quite cloudy with considerable of rain for the last 10 days but has now cleared off and is beautiful. We are haveing plenty to eat of late here. Our Comisarys now furnish for the Officers to buy, such things as Fish of different kinds Eggs Cheese and Caned fruits of various kinds but more particularly Peaches and Tomatoes. In that way we get such things at prices that does not taste so much of Green Backs as it does when we get of the Sutlers. We get Peaches for 50 & Tomatoes for 35 cts pr can. Dried Peaches for 10 & Dried Apples for 9 cts pr lb. Oysters for 40 cts fr 1/2 Can And nearly all the time we get Bakers bread for both Officers and men In 3 or 4 weeks if we should march from here we will be able to get Peaches and Blackberries in quantities as the Peach crop is large and the whole county is covered with Berries. All the Union Co. Boys are well I see by the papers that several of the boys from Liberty and the vicinity ware killed in the engagements around Vicksburg. I think the little County is furnishing her full quota of the noble dead for the Cause of the Union. Write as often as you can. for now the interval between letters will seem longer than ever. The Bugler is sounding inspection call which has to be gone through with evry sunday moring and I must go and see what my little family of boys need in the line of clothing and equipments for the next week and see if they have all washed their faces this moring and their Shirts during the week. So good by for a few days. Your affectionate Husband A.F.Davis
