his invitation to me to be present at the Commencement but if I had the oportunity I would surely attend without an invite And I will expect him to furnish me with a copy of his Speech provided he does not graduate in such a low Scale that he will not be permitted to make a Speech, but I hope that will not be the case with him. All signs of a forward movement from here has vanished for the present, and evrything has settled down to the old rotine. And all appears now to depend on the result at Vicksburg. There is one little item in todays paper which hints as though things were not so favorable for us there as they ware a few days since but I think it is not so. for one reason and that is that the price of Gold in New York is lower than it has been for some months and gradually going down and we have learned to put more faith in the news of Success or defeat to our Arms in that one little line (ie the price of gold) than in whole columns of highly colored Telegrams. One week ago today there was a man hung here for murder and it has been currently reported ever since that an accomplice of his in crime was to suffer ths same penalty today between 1 & 3 Oclock P.M. So directly after dinner the people began to flock around the gallows to witness the execution. and I went among others, and I have saw a great many large congregations of people in my time but for a promiscuous crowd. this by far beat anything I ever saw, as they could only be counted by Acres.
