The old 31st God bless them are at the front and has nobly sustained her good name but many of her noble members are killed and wounded. I hear that Cap McClery has lost several men killed and wounded but have been unable to hear their names. Hundreds yes thousands on both sides have fallen and the town is now filled with wounded. Oh God the suffering caused by such battles. There has been no fireing heard today [until?] since I commenced writing this letter 3 oclock then the roar of the cannon has commenced again but not very heavy. You may think from the tenor of this that I am discouraged but far from it for I say we will whip them good and so thinks evry man here except those cowardly devils of [illegible]. They say we are whipped now and we tell them they lie and for to dry up. You will have heard the full reports before this reaches you and as it is a poor time for writing long letters you must excuse this short one until the thing is decided and then I will give you the particulars. Tell all my friends I am in bully spirits and excellent health & so we all the company. Your affectionate husband A. F. Davis
