Just after tea last evning an order came from Gen'l Grant to be found in line of battle by daylight - and that at 5 - firing wd. commence along the whole line - to be kept up until 10 to try the enemy - after we had gone to bed there was another order came for the Brigade to have two days rations in their haversacks - and be ready to move at 6 1/2. They commenced firing at 5 and we were greeted with the thunder of the cannon evry moment - The rebels do not reply only now and then - every little while we can hear the music of a rebel shell sailing on over heads - It is now 9 o'clock and Will has been out with the Reg. since 6 1/2 - ready to do their duty. They are going to shell them awhile - and if they conclude by 10 that the enemy are weak a grand assault is to be made at least such was the purport of Grant's order - and there is strong hopes that Vicksburg will be ours before night.
