a good many funny little incidents occur on a march which seem to pass the time away. When we had gone about 4 miles we stopped at a plantation to await orders - and stayed there several hours - it was a nice house and had been splendidly furnished - but everything was broken up & destroyed. Will took me over the house - and there was enough broken furniture to furnish an ordinary house up north. Marble slab bureaus- stands- tables and splendid pictures lying out in the yard the frames torn off any lying all over the house and yard - ever so many fine bedsteads half broken up and everything badly used up - I was sitting in what used to be the parlor - talking with three Colonels of the Iowa regiment and our Col. got up to go out - when he got to the door he met a soldier standing in the door - looking in the room very intently - He asked him if he wanted anything - the soldier said no "well what are you standing here staring
