Shermans army lying before Jackson - we broke up camp and moved on - and made our camp right on the main battle ground. The front of the train had already reached us - and the rear wd. be on hand by morning. After we had gone to bed - the Col came to our tent to tell Will that a large rebel Cavalry force were in the road to Jackson to intercept the train, and try to capture the guard - So at 3 o'clock in the morning they were to be in line of battle and wait the attack until daylight. But it did not come - and at 5 the train was getting in line - the men were all ready - I was in my buggy - and the officer who was driving me that day had driven onto the road so we could get in the rear of the regiment. We had just stopped when one of the pickets came rushing down the road saying the secesh were coming. You had better believe there was some hurrying then - the train commenced the retreat - and the skirmishers went down the road on double quick and we waited for an hour for the attack - but the rebs went as quick as they came - we were to many for them they dare not attack us - Our Capt.
