I saw a woman walking on the road with two little children both in their night gowns & bare footed and a boy about 13 leading them. The soldiers had set fire to her house and she was going to a neighbors with her little ones. I felt sorry for her at first - but then the majority of the women are so insulting and they talk so mean to our soldiers that they do not care what they do to them. Did Uncle have plenty of peaches this season - I want a lot of his Buckingham apples for next winter. Has Uncle got any more of that Peach Brandy that he had when I was there, I was telling Will about it and he said he wanted to try a bottle or two if he would spare it for him - I wish I had some cider now. The water is very poor here and almost makes me sick. Will makes me take a spoonful of Whiskey in it always. The officers and soldiers all have to take a dose of Whiskey & quinine every morning to keep off the ague. But I must close, it is getting so warm - and I want this to go to day. Did thee find the plums for me - I would have sent thee mony to buy them & the cans but I did not have it and Will is short too - they expect any day to be paid off - Give my love to all the folks - With much to thyself in which Will joins me thy affectionate daughter Laura
