thoroughly cleaned and many of the streets watered every day. There are a great many sick here - mostly dysentry and intermittened fever. Will lost one man a day or two ago - the first funeral in the Regiment for over 8 months he said. A lady from Natchez called on me the other day and on inquiry she knew Sallie Stokes very well - told me where she was &c. Natchez they say is a beautiful place - and as no soldiers have ever been stationed there the country is well supplied with fruit and vegetables - and all around V. the country is a perfect desert: we get nothing but what is brought down the river and when boats come in, those in town get the first chance - consequently the troops out of the city get nothing but the bare necessities of life. We have not had a potato for three weeks - in fact vegetables of any kind. We get fresh meat many days (beef) & bakers bread - have real coffee to drink as Uncle Sam gives no sham articles in that line, plenty of white sugar - &
