hard road to hoe ever since we came from Washington. Camp Warren was enough to kil [any white man?] amost and I believe that if we had staid there much longer we would have got sick. We have been now in the service pretty near three months and has not received a cent of money, nor any cloathing ecepting a couple of shirts and some shoes. Its nothing but hard duty that has got so many down sick in our company but I expect that we will stay here until we are recruited up some. There is about 10,000 men here and around St Louis, It takes 2,200 men for Guard duty around St Louis every day. I must quit writing as the paper is runing out Good bye Write soon. Direct your letter to Benton Barracks St Louis Mo, Care of Capt Crabb Co H" 7th Reg Iowa Vol Dave Braden is writing some thing to you along with this Nothing more at present Good bye From your Sincere Friend Jim Shields Mr Stuart McDowell
