Great many negroes it seems that the whites are all in the army & And the negroes they have at work in the fortifacations there was a few came to us at one place where we layed all night and wanted to come a board but they would not let them we have two regiments and a part of the iowa Battery Besides some Cavalry aboard and they are considerabley divided in referance to the niger some of them threatened to shoot them but the nigers are to Be pitied they are in a most deplorable condition they are barefooted & ragged & look miserable a good many of the soldiers have them to cook & wash for them I must Close and wish you all happy new year and hope we will spend the next Christmas to-gather my love to william & margaret mary & mother and you self from you son Robert Moyle John is well and in good spirits Isaac is well and enjoying the trip well he wished to be remembered to his family an yous
