very large force here and up the Yazoo River and some coming down every day and we are expecting Banks up every day to ale [coordinate] he is first to attact Port Hudson 160 miles below then come right up to this point the rebels have it well fortified and think if they are beatten here they will give up not withstanding the sympathy manifested up North for them by some. There is some of the Rebels come in allmost every day and give them selves up most of them have shot guns and say that they they are tired of the war as well our men our men are all tired of war and go for a settlement if it can be done honorabley they want to get to their homes, and familys there is a great deal of sickness here & a good many deaths I am sorry to hear that the small pox is very Bad in iowa yous ought to go and get vaccinated immidateley and not go any where to expose yourselves we have a few casses of it here but now deaths as yet that I have heard of.
