Saint Louis June 9th 1863 Dear Mother I take my pen in hand to address you these few lines hoping they may find you in good health as you was when I last heard from you. We ought to be very thankful to the Lord for his mercies and kindness to us that he has spared us our lives and not cut us off in the midst of our sines as great many are mother I cannot express my feelings of thankfullness to god for his mercies to me for at one time i was very sick at Memphis but I have got about well the pain in my side that I told you about is gone and I feel pretty well I have been to aunt Janes pretty often and I had pot pie which i am very fond of you know but I did not eat so much of it as i did at the time we was cutting corn do you recolect I slept the whole afternoon behind a shock of corn from the good dinner trying to get a taste Mothe there is a big Battle going on at Vicksburg and i have no doubt our Boys is suffering i would like to hear from them Mother i want you to keep up good spirits as i think this fight will be the means of winding this thing
