WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1864. Struck Tents- for point unknown- With orders for every horse to be led, on account of his reduced condition. Marched 14 miles to Kelly's Landing on the Tenn. River. having crossed the point of Lookout Mount on a very good McAdamized Military Road and and remainder of road was Corduroy THURSDAY 14 Started early- and not being able to get across the River had either to return back and take another Road around a Mountain to White Sides or cross the said Mt. "Rackoon" Col. chose the latter worked until the middle of afternoon got two Wagons & Ambulance to top by taking animals all out and hauling them one mile by 100 men with Ropes. (Vertically, at right:-) The Teams started back and (Upside-down, above main entry:-) The cavalry marched 6 miles Encamped FRIDAY 15 The cavalry started early having a fine level mountain Road until reached Whitesides continued the March to shell mound distance 18 miles where we found Forage for mules awaiting us Sent forward from Bridgeport to assist us through our horses having been with already 48 hours.
