SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 1864. All quiet in front - but men quite much worn out by the excessive duties required of them - having but a small Cav. force here and Gen. Kilpatrick with them keeps the Rebs stirred up all the time - Says they are too close to us to make it wholesome, In good trim SUNDAY, MAY 1 Up before daylight and horses Saddled ready for a Surprise. no Rebs showing themselves about 8 O'Clock unsaddle - Chaplain preached in the evening. MONDAY 2 Up at three in the Morning moved out on a Reconnoisance to Tunnel Hill about day-light Encountered the Enemies Pickets about two miles from the entrance into Hookers Gape.- I supported the Skimishers with Co. ["D"?] and part of Co."A" after driving in the Pickets dismounted my men and drove the Rebs 4 Miles i.e. to Tunnel Hill Loosing Wallace C. Case Co."A" shot through the Bowels.- Sergt. Wm.Stockdale Co."A" mortally wounded through Right Lungs (Vertically, over left of entry:-) Having accomplished the object of the expedition Returned to Camp - Rebs following us up - Found them in force
